Family Portrait explores memory, emotional inheritance, and the invisible threads that quietly bind a family together across time. Rather than documenting physical likeness, the work approaches portraiture through movement, colour, gesture, and abstraction - presenting family not as fixed appearance, but as emotional presence, atmosphere, and energy.

Layered looping lines drift, collide, soften, and intertwine across the canvas surface; each colour acting as its own emotional interpretation of an individual family member. Some forms move harmoniously beside one another, whilst others overlap with tension, interruption, or distance - reflecting the complexity of familial relationships and the way love, grief, closeness, chaos, care, and memory often exist simultaneously within the same shared emotional space.

A flowing green line weaves continuously throughout the entire composition, representing the artist herself - existing both as participant within the family dynamic and observer quietly documenting it. This dual role is reinforced by the painted eye positioned near the upper section of the canvas: a realistic rendering of the artist’s own pupil, detached slightly from the surrounding abstraction and softly surveying the interactions unfolding below. The eye becomes a symbol of perception, remembrance, emotional awareness, and the quiet act of witnessing those we love.

Threaded gently throughout the painting is a continuous white line representing the artist’s late brother. Delicate yet ever-present, the line moves subtly between each relationship within the composition like a steady breath or unseen connection; suggesting that love and presence continue existing long beyond physical absence. Rather than occupying one singular place within the work, he becomes part of the emotional structure holding the entire family together invisibly beneath the surface.

Smaller symbolic details, including the recurring bow motif, introduce moments of individuality, softness, youth, and personal expression - balancing the emotional heaviness of the piece with tenderness, warmth, and traces of playful humanity.

Created using acrylic paint, ink, and Brusho pigment on canvas, the work embraces both intention and unpredictability through fluid mark-making, layered textures, diffused colour, and instinctive movement. The canvas frame itself has been hand-painted in rustic brown tones to resemble a vintage frame, continuing the recurring exploration of the frame throughout much of my practice. Here, the frame becomes less about containment and more about preservation - transforming the work into a contemporary family portrait held together through memory rather than realism.

Through abstraction, Family Portrait becomes an emotional map of connection, loss, inheritance, and love - documenting not what a family physically looks like, but what it feels like to carry one within yourself.

Art rooted in memory, feeling, and quiet observation; created for the souls who have always existed slightly outside the edges of belonging. I am endlessly grateful to share these fragments with people across the world, and I hope the work has reached something deep within you. Commissions are open, and I look forward to continuing to create pieces that resonate, linger, and inspire.
