Shuffle is a large-scale mixed media work created through surrender, spontaneity, and emotional instinct — a visual response to sound unfolding in real time. Developed over several weeks whilst listening to a continuously shuffled Spotify playlist spanning decades, genres, moods, and eras, the piece embraces unpredictability as both process and concept. From 1950s classics to contemporary music, familiar songs to unexpected discoveries, each session became an immediate reaction to whatever arrived next.

Rather than illustrating music directly, the work translates atmosphere, tempo, emotional tension, nostalgia, rhythm, and sensation into gesture, movement, texture, and colour. Some sections emerged through softness and repetition, whilst others arrived abruptly through chaos, interruption, noise, or emotional release. The composition was never pre-planned; no sketches, fixed structure, or desired outcome existed beforehand. Instead, the painting evolved instinctively through accumulation, contradiction, layering, and the quiet trust of allowing feeling to lead the process entirely.

Built through acrylic, Brusho pigment, oil pastel, ink, and impasto textures, looping lines drift across the canvas like fragments of melody or unfinished thought. Translucent washes dissolve beside heavier gestural marks, whilst moments of calm suddenly collide with restless movement and saturated colour. The surface constantly shifts between control and abandon - mirroring the emotional unpredictability of both music and memory itself.

At its core, Shuffle explores the strange freedom that can exist within randomness. By surrendering control to the unknown sequencing of a shuffled playlist, the work became less about decision-making and more about emotional honesty - responding instinctively without overcorrection, perfectionism, or restraint.

The piece exists as a visual archive of emotional immediacy: loud, vulnerable, restless, playful, melancholic, chaotic, soft, disconnected, hopeful, and unapologetically human all at once. Much like the experience of listening to music itself, Shuffle resists singular interpretation.
